How we make money

The short version

This site is free to read and carries no subscription. It is paid for by affiliate commissions: when a reader clicks through to some of the providers described here and signs up, that provider pays us a referral fee. It costs you nothing extra — you do not get a worse price for arriving through us, and you would not get a better one by going direct.

That is a real conflict of interest and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The rest of this page is about what we do so that the conflict cannot reach the rankings.

Current status: none of the 28 providers published on this site are commercial partners today. No page here currently carries a paid link, and no commission has been earned on anything you can read. We expect that to change — affiliate revenue is the intended business model, not an afterthought — and this page and the per-page disclosures will reflect it the moment it does.

What a commission does not buy

The obvious worry with an affiliate site is that the ranking is really an auction. Here it is not, and not because we promise to be good:

• Commission is not an input to the score.A provider’s overall score is computed from four published factors — pricing, medication, experience, and transparency and reputation — and whether the provider pays us is not one of them. There is no way for anyone here to set a score by hand. What each factor measures, and why there is no clinical factor, is at methodology.
• Paying providers are not grouped above non-paying ones. There is one list, ordered by the same rule for everyone. Some competitors put partners in a separate tier at the top while truthfully saying their scores are not for sale; sorting by group is selling placement, and we do not do it. The match quiz is a second ordering, against your answers rather than a score, and it works the same way: the rule is published, it runs in your browser, and commission is not one of its inputs. Whether a provider pays us decides which button a result shows, never where the result sits.
• There is no featured slot, sponsored row, or paid inclusion.A provider cannot buy its way onto this site, and paying us does not prevent us from publishing something unflattering. Every provider page carries a documented drawback drawn from that provider’s own site, partner or not.
• Manufacturer-direct options pay us nothing at all and are listed anyway. LillyDirect, NovoCare and similar programmes have no affiliate arrangement in existence. They are frequently the cheapest route, so leaving them out would be the single most profitable omission available to us. They are in.

Disclosure

Where a page contains an affiliate link, the disclosure appears above the first such link, in normal body text at normal body size — not as small grey type in a footer, and not behind a hover. That is what 16 CFR Part 255 requires and it is also just the honest way to do it.

Pages with no affiliate link deliberately carry no disclosure. A disclosure with nothing to disclose trains readers to skip past the ones that matter.

Other ways this site may earn

Affiliate commission is the main one. Others we intend to use, disclosed here in advance:

• Display advertising. Standard ad slots, sold by an ad network, once traffic is sufficient to qualify for one. Advertisers who buy those slots get no influence over editorial content and no ability to appear as an editorial recommendation. Ads will be visually distinct from content.
• Newsletter sponsorship. If we run a sponsored placement in an email, it will be labelled as sponsored in the email itself.
• Insurance broker referrals. Where we help readers work out whether a Medicare or Medicaid route covers their treatment, we may refer to licensed brokers and be paid for the referral. Any such referral will be disclosed at the point of referral. We are not licensed to sell insurance and we will not advise you on which plan to buy.

We do not and will not take payment for a specific editorial claim, a score, a ranking position, the removal of a criticism, or a review written to a provider’s brief.

What we do with the click data

Outbound links pass through our own redirect so commissions can be attributed and so we can see which content is worth writing more of. That log records the destination, the page and position the link was on, and a one-way hashed session value. It does not record your IP address and it is never joined to your email address. The rest

How we verify prices, what the scores measure and how providers are ordered is at methodology. What we refuse to publish regardless of who is paying is at editorial policy. If you think this page and our behaviour have come apart, that is exactly the kind of report our corrections policy is for.
